What is extrait de parfum? EDP, EDT and extrait

A practical guide to concentration labels and why wear still varies.

What extrait means

Extrait de parfum is a concentration label used for perfume with a relatively high proportion of aromatic materials. Brands set their own formulas, so the label alone cannot tell you exactly how strong a scent will feel or how long it will last.

An extrait can also be composed differently from an Eau de Parfum with the same name. Look at the full product name and concentration when comparing releases.

EDT, EDP and extrait

Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum and extrait are broad categories, not universal performance grades. The proportions and materials differ by house. A vivid EDT may project more than a soft extrait, while an extrait may sit close to the skin for longer.

If a fragrance comes in several concentrations, sample the exact release you intend to buy. Opening, drydown and character can change as well as intensity.

Choosing a concentration

Think about the setting and how much presence you want. Check the recorded projection and longevity estimates, then try a sample on skin. Apply a modest amount first; you can add more once you know how it develops.

Common questions

Does extrait de parfum always last longer than EDP?

No. Concentration is one factor, but the formula and how it wears on your skin matter too.

Is an EDT simply a weaker EDP?

Not necessarily. Different concentrations of a named fragrance can use different formulas and smell different.
